Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading program which began as Advantage Learning Systems, Inc. J.T. Reddick Elementary purchased AR in 1993. The AR program monitors and guides students on their way to becoming fluent, independent readers. The AR program provides immediate, individualized feedback on student performance. It is designed for Kindergarten through 12th grade and all ability levels. Research shows that AR students show faster growth in reading achievement, and teachers often see higher test scores on both standardized and performance-based tests.
Accelerated Reader books are designated with a neon green dot on the spine of the book. The yellow, red, blue, or dark green dots determine the reading level (ZPD) of the book.
After reading the book, the student takes a computerized AR practice quiz at school. The tests are comprised of questions that evaluate comprehension. Finally, the computer gives the student immediate feed back, adds the quiz results to the student’s reading record and creates a report for the student, teacher, and parent. Students earn points based on the book’s length, difficulty, and number of questions answered correctly. Students will also find AR books in their classroom collections, home collections, and at the Tift County Public Library.
After earning points for books read, students are treated to an AR store 3 times a year to “buy” items with their accumulated points, invited to luncheons in the media center, cupcake parties, pizza parties, and chances to participate in many drawings held. We love to read!
