Band
Band is designed to teach students basic musical skills, appreciation of music of the master composers, personal responsibility and team work. It is also to prepare for participation in the band in the upper grades. At the end of the course the students will not only be able to demonstrate knowledge of musical vocabulary and methodology for study, rehearsal and performance of band music but also have an understanding of working with others towards a common goal. Band meets every day from 1:20- 2:10.
Opportunities
In 6th grade band, the students will have the opportunity to perform on an instrument in a large group as well as perform individually.
Large Group Opportunities
- First Concerts – In December, the band will perform for parents and friends. In March, the band will also participate in performing for the Pride Program.
- Georgia Music Educators’ Association District II Band Festival – Bands grades 6 – 12 from all over our district participate in this event. Each band is evaluated on three pieces of music by three judges who score bands on specific musical objectives. Each band is then judged on their sight-reading skills.
- Spring Concert – Every year each 6th Grade Band will perform a Spring Concert for their school as well as be a feature group during J. T. Reddick’s Honors Night Program May. There may be a time that the band will travel to one of the Assisted Living Residences to perform as a Community Service Project.
Small Group Opportunities
- Sixth Grade Honor Band –students may audition to represent J. T. Reddick Elementary School in the District Two Honor Band Clinic hosted by Georgia Music Educators’ Association. Their audition includes performing a prepared section of the their band music, sightreading, and performing their major scales. This event takes place in April.
- District II Solo Festival – There is not a limit on the number of participants for this group. Each student is responsible for learning a solo and singing before a judge. This event takes place in April.
