Attendance Policy
Students who have been absent MUST bring in a valid written excuse from their parent on their return to school. Excused absences include illness or a death in the family. Only three written excuses from a parent/guardian will be accepted per 9 weeks (Tift County Board Regulation JBD-R).
Parents of students from ages 6-9 who have 5 unexcused absences will receive notification from the Attendance Committee for a parent conference. Upon the 6th unexcused absence, a warrant will be taken out against the parent. At such time, the student and parent/guardian will be expected to appear before the Magistrate Judge and the Judge of the State Court, to show cause for the six or more unexcused absences.
Parents of students from ages 10-15 who have 5 unexcused absences will receive notification from the Attendance Committee for a parent conference. Upon the 6th unexcused absence, a juvenile complaint for violation of the Georgia Compulsory Attendance Law will be filed against the student in Juvenile Court. The student will be placed on Informal Adjustment for 90 days with the Department of Juvenile Justice. At the same time, a warrant will be taken out against the parent for violation of the Georgia Compulsory Attendance Law.
Parents are responsible for getting students to school on time, and should not make a habit of taking students out of school prior to the official dismissal time. Students in grades K-8 will be referred to the Attendance Committee when they have received a combination of 15 tardies and/or early dismissals. A combination of 15 unexcused tardies/early dismissals will be counted as one unexcused absence for the school term.
The Attendance Committee consists of school officials and members of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
